Today we all (Kelly, Joel, Rhiannon, and Draco) went on a mini-road trip to Devil's Milhopper Geological State Park. This is the site of a 120 ft deep and 500 ft across sinkhole in Gainsville. It was really beautiful and lush, despite the ever-present mosquitoes. It was a long drive, but we took the scenic route up. We also got to see all the Gator fans out, as there was a home game today.
There is a huge staircase down into the sinkhole. Down the stairs was slow-going because Rhiannon was afraid of the spaces between the boards. Up the stairs was also slow-going because there were a lot of stairs and I am old and out of shape. Also, it was a gorgeous scene and I had to stop and take pictures. The pictures really don't give a clear idea of what it was like, though. The sinkhole is just so big!
There is also a nature trail around the perimeter of the sinkhole. Rhiannon enjoyed running ahead of us on the trail and Draco had to smell everything.
We didn't see wildlife, really, because we were noisy and it was the middle of the day, but we did see two huge spiders. I couldn't get a great picture of them, but I tried. These pics don't show scale, but imagine the spiders' bodies the length of the palm of your hand.
We also saw a deer. Unfortunately, it was dead. Two rangers were carrying her out of the park. They said she fell into the stream and drowned. It was sad, but I took a picture anyway, because it was also interesting.
